Any passions/interests? Learning how to be a mother as the twins constantly teach me new things, spending time with my loving husband Keith, cooking, running, volleyball, and my new favorite activity—naps!
How did you become a volunteer/why are you involved? I had always considered myself ‘pro-life’ in the sense that I would never personally have an abortion if faced with that decision. I didn’t press my beliefs on anyone because I felt that women in that position were obviously in enough pain. I remember angrily walking past pro-life exhibits on campus and not stopping to actually see abortion for what it really is, or even to talk to anyone about the issue. During my junior year at Texas A&M as a volunteer for St. Thomas Aquinas’ youth program, I was asked to plan and coordinate Pro-Life Night for the junior high youth. After taking my assignment home to do a little research, I realized that by being silent about the issue of abortion I was taking part in the continuation of a mass holocaust. I was completely floored and humbled—if I was responsible for teaching an upcoming generation about what it means to be pro-life, I needed to call in the experts, because clearly I didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. I asked a fellow St. Thomas choir member who I knew was involved in ‘pro-life stuff’ if she could point me in the right direction. Little did I know that she was on the Board of Directors for the Coalition for Life. I dove in head first after that, after clearly being prompted by the Holy Spirit to take action. My previous stigmas surrounding pro-lifers were that they were all crazy radicals who could justify shooting an abortionist or bombing a clinic for the ‘greater good’. I figured that if there could at least be one person on the sidewalk to show real love to all involved in abortion, then maybe one person would change their mind and choose life. I was ecstatic to find out that a whole network of peaceful pro-lifers exists to accomplish that mission. The harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few. God could be working through you next once you make that faithful step toward finding what being a Sidewalk Counselor is about!
Why you are pro life (is there a story here?): I am pro-life because Jesus Christ sacrificed His own life for mine. He saw that we were all doomed to spend eternity without God and therefore without love because of our failure to love God fully in obedience, trust, and self-control. My life is precious to Him, and I recognize now that in all of my failures I was misled while searching for the one thing only He can give, and that is Love. It’s not just about abortion. It’s about helping a mother, a father, children, clinic workers, EVERYONE find that same love. I am constantly amazed at what God has done through each individual on the sidewalk, and the conviction only deepens the longer I am actively involved in spreading His message of life and love.
