Why do you oppose the choice to have an abortion?

We oppose the choice to abort because of the data. Science and technology reveal what takes place at conception through natural birth. Abortion ends the life of a unique human being with their own human genetic code, DNA, and heartbeat. Science tells us that all zygotes, embryos, fetuses, infants, toddlers, teenagers, and elderly are all human. They may be smaller or larger or immature or dependent or sick or athletic, but they are all human. They are at different stages, but all of those stages are human stages. If they are not human zygotes or human fetuses or human teenagers, then what species are they?

Pro-choice advocates have had to abandon science and reason over the last 30 years. They now make the abortion debate about choice and personal liberty. Abortion makes the person’s life a choice based on preference. Any choice that gives one human being the autonomy to determine the life and fate of the other human being is a bad choice.

Additionally, millions of women who have made that choice have psychological problems and regret that last a lifetime. Both sides should not ignore or judge these women, but listen to them. On the other hand, no woman in 34 years has come forward and wished they had aborted their baby.

Why do you oppose Planned Parenthood?

We oppose Planned Parenthood for numerous reasons, but here are some quick facts about this controversial organization. Planned Parenthood brought the first abortion clinic to Bryan/College Station. Planned Parenthood is the leader of the abortion industry. They support abortion at all stages and for any reason, which is drastically opposed to the views of most of the American public. Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion operation in America performing over 264,000 abortions in their last reported year. While the national abortion rate has declined over the last 10 years, Planned Parenthood’s has increased.

Planned Parenthood shapes the dangerous abortion mindset which claims that some people are wanted and some are unwanted. They tell us that we can decide the difference of these two and thus have the power to determine the fate of the unwanted. This mindset has not worked for any society in history and does not build a healthy culture for our community and nation.

Planned Parenthood claims that your TV commercials make false claims about them; is that true?

Unfortunately for everybody, the commercial is factual. Our commercial exposes and cites three simple facts about Planned Parenthood:

1. Holly Paterson died as a result from her visit to Planned Parenthood from using the abortion pill, RU- 486. This case is very well documented and cited in the commercial. Planned Parenthood was not following the FDA regulations to administer RU-486. Despite over 400 reports of complications to the FDA and 6 visits to Planned Parenthood resulting in deaths from RU-486, Planned Parenthood continues to defend and distribute this harmful drug.

2. Planned Parenthood’s condoms were ranked last in both strength and reliability according to “Consumer Reports”. The commercial not only cites the article but show it on the screen during the commercial. Instead of taking these poorly ranked condoms off the market, Planned Parenthood gives them away for free on the campus of Texas A&M University. Students, women, and the community should be educated on this before they put their trust in this organization.

3. Planned Parenthood has no doctor in Bryan to see patients except for an out of town abortionist. This is a fact. Planned Parenthood in Bryan does not have a medical doctor to see patients, unless you want an abortion.

This commercial is not to slander Planned Parenthood but to accurately and responsibly report what we factually know about this controversial organization. Planned Parenthood has made numerous attempts to discredit and stop this commercial from running and all attempts have failed for one reason, the commercial states facts.

Are you the people who stand on the sidewalk and judge women?

Yes, we stand on the sidewalks to peacefully pray; no, we are not there to judge anyone. In fact we place Sidewalk Counselors there to offer free and professional medical alternatives to the women entering. Very often our volunteers are quickly judged by people who disagree with our cause, but we do not judge the women using Planned Parenthood. We do judge abortion itself as everyone should. Abortion ends innocent human life in a horrific procedure, and out of compassion we are obliged to help women who feel they have to do it. Being honest about the reality of abortion and then not going to the sidewalk to offer better solutions would not be compassion, but deception. We are there for the women before, during, and after their abortion. Thousands of women have taken information and sought other options. Many of these women have thanked Sidewalk Counselors, some in tears, for giving them alternatives to Planned Parenthood and giving their babies a last chance at life.

Why do you stand out there all week, even when abortions aren't happening?

Planned Parenthood is the first and only abortion clinic in Bryan/College Station. Before building their abortion facility in 1998, Planned Parenthood was a referral office for their abortion facility in Houston. We don’t want women going to Planned Parenthood for their other services so we provide cheaper medical alternatives to woman for all health services. The Coalition for Life can arrange for women to see a doctor where Planned Parenthood will not let you see a doctor unless you want an abortion. Sidewalk Counselors also give away resources where women can receive free pregnancy tests and free ultrasounds, something Planned Parenthood does not offer. Moreover, if a woman who uses Planned Parenthood’s services does get pregnant she is likely to turn to them for help and according their own annual report, Planned Parenthood performs 180 abortions for every 1 adoption referral. There is not much “choice” in those numbers. By avoiding Planned Parenthood altogether she can get professional healthcare that is not from the local abortion clinic. This is why it is important to offer every woman a choice everyday that Planned Parenthood is open.

Why don't you just pray at home?

We do pray at home, but we know from scripture that God calls us to do more. Through stand and pray, we show our love for God and neighbor. The woman and their unborn babies do not need the false compassion of abortion, but true love, real love, love that is life giving. No where in our culture is Christ more needed than on the sidewalks of abortion clinics. Unless Christians are willing to go out there, His love cannot be offered in the woman’s most crucial moment. Jesus did not only pray for tax collectors and sinners; he talked to them, reached out to them, and exhorted them to conversion. We aren’t just at the sidewalk for the babies, but for the support and conversion of mothers, fathers, escorts, nurses, and the abortionist. Additionally, we can not offer tangible medical help to women on the day they have an abortion if we’re only at home praying.

Some do not like seeing people out there because it reminds them of the reality of what is happening on the other side of the fence right in their hometown. The prayer presence makes people think about abortion, but it also gives them a tangible avenue to make a difference. We should not despair nor blame the people out there, but trust God, conquer our fear, and act on our conscience. Nobody enjoys doing it, but every volunteer talks about the humbling and spiritual impact it has on them to reflect on themselves and reach out to those in need through prayer. Some Christians are not able to go out because they do not have the capacity to handle the sadness and reality of the situation, and that is perfectly okay; we have their prayers and support. Others do not go out because they do not want to. While we are all in this category, we must not be afraid to take the love of Jesus to women and the unborn. It convicts the heart and shows the abortion minded women that there are people who love them and are praying for them. We are their last hope for changing their minds and saving their babies. The prayer presence on the sidewalk is a witness to what this world needs, love.

What information do you hand out?

The trained Sidewalk Counselors hand out brochures that offer other healthcare choices for the women entering Planned Parenthood. The “Pregnant? Need Help?” brochure provides alternatives including physicians and crisis pregnancy centers. It also gives information about the risks of emergency contraception, RU-486, and medical abortions. The pamphlets stuffed inside this offer more information about abortion, human development, adoption, post-abortion syndrome, and finding healing after an abortion. We also have a health options brochure that offers information about women’s healthcare, men’s healthcare and pregnancy help. This brochure is handed out during the week and is stuffed with pamphlets about Planned Parenthood, contraception, emergency contraception, and chastity. Click on the icons below to see PDFs of these brochures.

What is RU-486 (the abortion pill)?

RU-486 is a series of pills administered in two phases. The first phase kills the baby by blocking a hormone that maintains pregnancies. The second phase induces the baby to pass through the uterus. This type of abortion is known as a chemical abortion and can only be used to end pregnancies that are less than 7 weeks along.

At least seven women have died from RU-486, six of those from visits to Planned Parenthood facilities, and many others have experienced a number of side effects. Common side effects are severe cramping, severe bleeding, heart attack, incomplete abortion, nausea, vomiting, and death.

RU-486 is particularly traumatic to women because they sometimes see their unborn child expelled after it passes through the uterus. For more information, stories, and alternatives visit the RU-486 page.

What's wrong with emergency contraception (Plan B)?

Emergency contraception, known as Plan B in the United States, is a drug used to prevent pregnancy after sexual intercourse has already taken place. One major risk with Plan B is that it can inhibit implantation after fertilization has occurred, thus causing an early abortion. For more information on emergency contraception, please visit the Emergency Contraception page.

Why don't you work at the national level to get laws changed?

Almost everyone agrees the abortion debate is ultimately about changing hearts and minds, not just laws. We do work with many wonderful organizations that are working hard to overturn Roe v. Wade and pass laws that will help reduce abortions on the state level. However, our focus is on the local woman scheduled to have her abortion along with her baby that will be aborted next week in our community. Roe vs. Wade is poorly written; it makes the unborn person property, and has been a disaster for our social and legal system. However, if we only focus on changing a law and ignore the urgency the law created, then we're not doing justice to the victims of that law. We must work to overturn abortion laws and out of love reach out to those who are also the victims of unjust laws. To acknowledge the reality of abortion but not support those who lovingly offer help to women and their babies on the sidewalks is contradictory and weakens the pro-life movement.
